Rosh Hashanah kicks off the High Holy days. It’s a time to reflect on the year that’s passed and to look forward to what lies ahead. We think one of the best ways to honor this special time is by gathering your loved ones around the table.
And celebrating holidays as an interfaith couple has enough challenges–the menu shouldn’t have to be one of them. So, we put together this round-up of fun and simple recipes for Jewish-Gentile couples. Try them out whether it’s your first Rosh Hashanah or your fiftieth!
Brisket
Jamie Geller says she doesn’t exactly know what it is about brisket that makes it feel distinctly Jewish. We don’t either–but don’t let that stop you from trying it! Geller’s recipe has enough herbs and spices to perk up your appetite just in the reading of it.
Sephardic Rice
From the authors of “May I Have That Recipe,” here’s a vegetarian dish that’s slightly spicy and looks pretty enough to help stage your table. Written by two sisters who grew up in a Sephardic Jewish household, the recipe definitely rings of authenticity!
Challah
This recipe from the NY Times includes a few pro tips (like how to get that glossy top, and how to form a circular loaf). Homemade bread sounds intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll love making your own bread, and you can adapt this challah recipe for different occasions.
Apple cake
